Tsumago

Tsumago is located on the Nakasendô, the former road connecting Tokyo to Kyoto in the Edo Period (from the 17th to the 19th century). The village has been preserved almost exactly as it was: cars are prohibited in the main streets and the landscape is not disfigured by power lines or satellite dishes, which gives the town an authentic look. Here and there, you can find small stalls selling local handicrafts and restaurants where you can sample the famous soba (noodles made from buckwheat) and the local delicacy, gohei-mochi, small rice balls covered in a sesame and nut sauce.
