Shimanto is a city located in the southwestern part of Kōchi Prefecture, Japan, and the name of city fad been "Nakamura" until 2005.
Shimanto is located on the Shimanto River. The residents speak a distinct dialect of Japanese known as Hata-ben.
As of March 31, 2008, the city has an estimated population of 36,888 and a population density of 58.3 persons per km². The total area is 632.42 km².
