Koyasan, or Mount Koya, is the spiritual centre of the esoteric Shingon Buddhist school, which was founded by bonze Kukai approximately 1,200 years ago. On the top of the mountain (about 1,000 metres – about 3,280 feet – above sea-level), you will find many temples, pagodas and a giant cemetery leading to Kukai’s mausoleum.
