Iya Valley

Iya Valley is renowned throughout Japan for its beautiful setting in the midst of high mountains and for its old vine bridges. The valley is difficult to access and has often served as a refuge for defeated warriors and daimyo. The members of the Taira clan took refuge here after losing the Gempei War.
Recently, the valley has become more and more attractive to tourists. The tourists mostly arrive from the western part of the valley, which has a better transport infrastructure. Crossing vine bridges over the gorges is an experience must sought after, even though the bridges have been reinforced with steel cables.
