  • Leave from Osaka or Kyoto (depending on your basic tour) for the town of Hiroshima on the famous Shinkansen bullet train with your English-speaking guide.
  • You can choose to alight in Hiroshima to visit the city (this is a free day-out).
  • Do not miss the Peace Memorial Park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which includes the A-Bomb Dome, the former Industrial Promotion Hall located at the point of impact of the explosion and which has been preserved as a memorial. We also recommend you visit the remarkable Peace Memorial Museum, designed by architect Kenzo Tange and devoted to the atomic bomb.
  • You will then take the train on your own to go to the town of Takamatsu on Shikoku Island.
  • Lunch and dinner at your leisure
  • Spend the night in the 4* Ana Hotel Clement Hotel in Takamatsu (or similar)

  • You will take a day trip to the town of Takamatsu, in the northern part of Shikoku, on the coast of the Inland Sea.
  • You will walk around Ritsurin Park, one of the most famous landscape gardens in Japan, which was originally created in 1620. It now stretches over approximately 185 acres and contains six ponds and over a thousand trees.
  • Then, you will stroll around Tamano Park, where you can see the ruins of the old feudal castle, of which only Tsukimi yagura, a three-storey observation tower built in 1588 and designed a National Treasure, remains.
  • Lunch and dinner at your leisure.
  • Spend the night in the 4* Ana Hotel Clement Hotel in Takamatsu (or similar)
Visit Ryozen-ji, Gokurakuji and Konsenji temples Jour 3 – Itano

Jour 3 – Itano Visit Ryozen-ji, Gokurakuji and Konsenji temples

  • This morning, with your English-speaking guide, you will follow in the steps of Kukai, the bonze who founded the Buddhist Shingon sect, the only sect to believe that spiritual enlightenment can be reached during life. This inspired Kukai to walk through Shikoku and found the 88 temples that are now part of the 88 Temples Pilgrimage.
  • You will go to the first stop on the pilgrimage trail, in the small town of Itano and will visit temples 1, 2 and 3 on foot: Ryozen-ji, Gokurakuji and Konsenji.
  • In the evening, you will share the monks’ vegetarian meal at Shojin Ryori temple and attend the evening ceremony and the end-of-day prayers. Finally, spend the night in another temple, Anrakuji, which welcomes pilgrims for the night.
  • Lunch and dinner in your ryokan.
  • Spend the night in the Anrakuji shukubo in Itano (or similar)
Nishi Iya and Higashi Iya Ochiai Villages Jour 4 – Iya Valley

  • After sharing the monks’ breakfast in your shukubo, you will head out to explore Shikoku Island.
  • You will take the train to the small spa resort of Iya Onsen, then you will take a private car to the Gorges of Oboke in the Iya Valley, in the centre of Shikoku Island.
  • Admire the spectacular rocky precipices created by the river!
  • You will then be taken to Nishi Iya village where you will find Kazura Bashi, a famous bridge made of woven vines and bamboo, in the typical 12th century style. A little further on, you can admire another amazing, charming bridge built in the same style: Fufu Bashi.
  • You will then discover Higashi Iya Ochiai village where the local villagers have tried to preserve their traditional way of living.
  • Lunch and dinner in your ryokan.
  • Spend the night in the 3* Superior Kazurabashi Hotel in the Iya Valley (or similar).
Kotohira-Gu and Kompira-san Shinto shrines Jour 5 – Iya Valley / Kotohira

  • After a delicious breakfast, you will proceed to the town of Kotohira, which is famous for being the home of the most famous Shinto shrine in Shikoku: Kompira-san.
  • Kotohira-Gu Shinto shrine is an important religious centre, which has been a popular, bustling centre since the 17th century. A famous place of pilgrimage, it is also a very active centre for artistic creation.
  • You will have dinner and spend the night in a ryokan, a typical Japanese guesthouse.
  • Have lunch and dinner at your leisure in your ryokan.
  • Spend the night in the 4* Kobaitei Ryokan in Kotohira (or similar)
Matsuyama-jô Castle, bath or spa treatment in the Dôgo Onsen Honkan Jour 6 – Matsuyama / Dogo Onsen

  • This morning, let's travel by train to discover the west of Shikoku, the biggest city of the island : Matsuyama
  • Pride of the city, the last floor of the castle Matsuyama-jô have a beautiful seaview
  • Visit of the Ninomaru Shiseki Teien garden
  • Discover the city in a Rickshaw to enjoy the panorama
  • The Dôgo onsen honkan is the most famous bath of Japan. Build in 1894, the Yûshinden is a special bath dedicated to the imperial family
  • Have lunch and dinner at your leisure in your ryokan
  • Spend the night in the 4* Yamatoya Honten in Dogo Onsen (or similar)
Ferry for Hiroshima and sacred island of Miyajima Jour 7 – Matsuyama / Hiroshima / Osaka

  • After having had breakfast in your ryokan, you can choose to take the ferry to Hiroshima, still with your English-speaking guide.
  • You can also make the most of the day to visit the sacred island of Miyajima, 30 minutes from Hiroshima, on your own. This beautiful island houses the famous floating torii, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the evening, you will return to Osaka on your own.
  • Lunch and dinner at your leisure
  • Spend the night in the 4* Granvia Hotel in Osaka (or similar)

Please note that it is very easy to find food in Japan as there are many little restaurants offering a wide variety of dishes. Furthermore, simple, filling meals are inexpensive. Bon appetit!

    • Are you coming to Japan in winter?
      Bring warm clothes as the winter temperatures in Tokyo are similar to those in Paris.
      If you are travelling to the north of Japan in winter, to the west coast or to the Japanese Alps, bring clothes adapted to extreme temperatures since cold winds from Siberia often blow over Japan!
      A real Northern experience!
    • Are you going to Japan in summer?
      Please note that the weather will be very hot and humid! Pack your summer clothes but do not forget to bring an umbrella, especially in June and September, as well as warmer clothes for the cool evenings or for the north of Japan. Do not forget your sunglasses, hats and swimming costumes!
    • Are you going to Japan during the intermediary seasons: spring and autumn?
      Do not hesitate to bring summer clothes (shorts, swimming costumes, T-shirts, light shoes) as well as winter clothes (umbrella, jeans, jumpers, jackets and closed shoes) as the temperatures are mild in the south of Japan but cooler in Tokyo and the north.
    • Are you stopping off in Asia on the way there or on the way back?
      In this case, to avoid standing out in Hong Kong in your ski-suit or winter jacket, pack T-shirts, shorts and light shoes.
