Jour 1 - London / Osaka Scheduled flights to Osaka, possibility of a stopover in an city in Asia, Europe or the Middle East

Jour 2 – Osaka Start by visiting Osaka Castle
- Arrive at Osaka International Airport.
- Once you have settled into the hotel, head out to explore the third largest city in Japan . Fall in love with this bustling, friendly city that is a pleasure to stroll around. Start by visiting Osaka Castle, a beautiful building that was rebuilt in exactly the same fashion after World War Two and is surrounded by lush gardens.
- Then, walk around the lively Umeda district. Do not miss the incredible panoramic view from the famous Floating Observatory on the roof of the Umeda Sky Building, the most futuristic building in the city. You will find many shops and delicious restaurants in this neighbourhood.

Jour 3 – Himeji Himeji Medieval Fortress
- After a well-deserved good night’s sleep, you will discover the most famous castle in Japan: Himeji, one of the only three wooden castles still remaining in Japan withMatsumoto-jô and Kumamoto-jô. Built in the 14th century, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993, it is the largest and most elegant medieval fortress in the country. Also known as Hakuro-jô, White Heron Castle, because of its brilliant white exterior, this incredible structure survived, almost unharmed, the bombings of World War Two.
- As you climb up to the different floors, you will start to get a clear picture of the structure of a Japanese castle. Furthermore, you will have an amazing view of the steep roofs of the castle and of the town of Himeji!
- After visiting the castle, stroll around the charming Japanese garden of Koko-en which boasts a lovely landscape of small ponds where the much-loved Japanese carps live as well as little stone bridges.

- Spend the night in the 3* Claire Higasa Hotel or 4* Nikko Hotel in Himeji (or similar).
Jour 4 – Okayama Stroll around Koraku-en garden
- In the morning, leave for the town of Okayama on the coast of the Inland Sea. Walk around Koraku-en garden, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful gardens in the archipelago. Ponds, hills, rice-fields and tea plantations make it a lovely place for a stroll, with Okayama Castle in the background.
- Contrary to Himeji Castle, the walls of Okayama Castle are black. It was erected in 1597, destroyed by bombings in 1945 and then replicated in 1966. In the afternoon, discover the secret garden in the centre of the town of Kurashiki . An eleven-minute train ride to Okayama, this medium-sized town boasts a district dating back to the Edo period, where the maze of alleyways leads to a canal lined with former Merchant houses, now museums or inns. Discover another side of Japan as the charm of the area is reinforced by the tranquillity of the town, which is still rarely visited by tourists.

Jour 5 – Takamatsu Stroll around Koraku-en garden
- This morning, you will cross the Inland Sea, to the town of Takamatsu on Shikoku Island.
- Visit the amazing Ritsurin Park, which dates back to the mid-1600s. It took over a century to build. With ponds, meditation areas, teahouses and little islands spread out over 17 acres, the park is divided into two parts: the north and south gardens. The north garden could be described as a wild garden as it houses a duck hunting preserve.
- The south garden is a typically Japanese landscaped garden where each tree, lake and teahouse is in a specific location. As you walk through the garden, admire the small Higurashi teahouse, a thatched-roof pavilion that dates back to 1898, the amazing Engetsu Kyo bridge, the big Kikugetsu teahouse or Chrysanthemum Moon, which dates back to the Edo period(1640). You can also visit Tamano garden, where you can see the remains of the old feudal castle, one of the only castles with moats filled by the water of the Inland Sea. In the evening, you will return to your hotel in Okayama.

Jour 6 – Kyoto Visit the Golden Pavilion
- Spend three wonderful days discovering the incredible historical and cultural heritage of the former capital of Japan. Do not forget that, in Kyoto, each temple has its own landscape garden. These amazing gardens are all different and have been designed to highlight the natural beauty of the area.
- On the first day, we recommend you visit the most beautiful temples of Kyoto, which are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, starting with the famous Kinkaku-ji better known as theGolden Pavilion as this elegant structure is entirely covered with gold leaf. A short distance away, Ryoan-ji temple, famous for its Zen garden, is an invitation to pause and to meditate. A little further on, Ninna-ji houses beautiful structures: a palace surrounded by nature as well as a small pagoda. In the eastern part of the city, visit the most impressive temple in Kyoto: Kiyomizu-dera, a beautiful wooden structure, perched on the side of a cliff and propped up by giant wooden stilts.
- Finally, as night falls, walk around the narrow alleyways of Gion, Kyoto’s historical district, where you will find beautiful wooden teahouses hosting extremely refined dinners. You may be lucky enough to run into one of the Geisha, who still live and work in this district. On the other side of the river, in a parallel street, you will find plenty to eat in the charming Pontocho district.

Jour 7 – Kyoto Do not miss Nijo Castle and the 2,000 temples of Kyoto
- There are still many treasures for you to discover in Kyoto!
- In the town centre, do not miss Nijo Castle. Built between 1543 and 1616 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, it looks nothing like a fortress but rather like a palace. Iemitsu, Tokugawa Ieyasu’s grandson had the rooms decorated with lovely paintings by the Kano school that you can still admire today. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it houses a beautiful landscape garden.
- If you like temples, you are in luck: Kyoto has over 2,000 of them. In the town centre, we recommend Heian shrine, which has a gigantic red Torii at the entrance as well as one of the most beautiful gardens in Kyoto. In the outskirts of the city, visit the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine where thousands of red torii straddle a network of trails over a few kilometres in the midst of a dense forest.
- Please note that it is also possible to visit two beautiful gardens, that are closed to the public and can only be visited with a reservation: the moss garden in Saihoji temple and the Katsura Imperial Villa. (Must be reserved at least one month before departure).

Jour 8 – Kyoto Stroll along the Philosopher’s Walk
- If you enjoy nature hikes, you will love the Arayashima district and its beautiful bamboo grove: Sagano Forest. Not far from there, do not miss Tenryû-ji temple, one of the five big Zen temples in Kyoto. Its garden represents a dry waterfall of rocks flowing into a pond in the shape of the Chinese character “heart”. Climb up Iwatayama mountain, in the Arashiyama district, where you can see hundreds of monkeys roaming freely. Enjoy the incredible view of Kyoto!
- North of the town, stroll along the Philosopher’s Walk, and enjoy a pleasant walk along a charming canal. This path, which is beautiful when the cherry trees are in blossom, which will take you to the famous Silver Pavilion and its lovely moss garden. Take the time for a cup of tea and delicious cakes at the ”Pomme” cafe Hiroshige reminiscent of Paris of a past age.

Jour 9 – Nara Wander around Nara Park, where thousands of deer roam freely
- Spend a pleasant day in the small town of Nara. Founded in the 8th century, Nara was the first real capital of Japan from 710 to 784 . Forty kilometres (about 24 miles) from Kyoto, Nara is also a cultural hotspot that houses many UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Wander around Nara Park, where thousands of deer roam freely.
- As you enter the Park, do not miss Kôfuku-jitemple, which is comprised of ten buildings including a beautiful five-storey pagoda which dates back to 1426. Next, visit Todaiji temple, where you can see the largest bronze Buddha in Japan. Then, walk through the forest until you reach Kasuga shrine. Erected in 768, its bright red buildings create a strikingly beautiful contrast with the surrounding greenery. Wrapped in light, the shrine shines brightly thanks to the 1,800 stone lanterns lining its paths and the thousands of metal lanterns hanging from the corridors’ eaves. In the town centre, Nara-machi district is a lovely place for a stroll. Its maze of small, narrow streets houses local craft shops. Make the most of this time and visit Gango-ji temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Jour 10 – Kanazawa Enjoy a pleasant stroll in the gardens of Kanazawa Castle
- This morning, you will leave the beautiful city of Kyoto, for Kanazawa, which is also home to many treasures. Enjoy a pleasant stroll in the gardens of Kanazawa Castle an enchanting location with a dense forest on one side and a more landscaped area on the other, offering beautiful views of the castle. Walk around the amazing Kenrokuen garden, which is said to be one of the three most beautiful gardens in Japan.
- It contains hundreds of different plant species, and is crisscrossed by streams over which stride wood or stone bridges – this garden is a gem! Not far from there, take a look at The 21st Century Museum, which houses some incredible works of modern art.
- Then, visit the samurai district and its well-preserved traditional wooden houses. The former residence of the samurai Nagamachi has a lovely indoor garden and houses an exhibit of samurai armour and period sabres that is open to the public! Inside, you can even enjoy delicious green tea served in the tea ceremony room.
- In the evening, watch the town come alive in the Katamachi district, where you will find many restaurants and bars. Do not miss the pleasant pedestrian of street Tate-machi where you will find some of the most fashionable shops in town.

Jour 11 – Kanazawa / Tokyo Admire the colourful neon lights in the Ginza district in Tokyo
- This morning, you will go to the northern part of the town of Kanazawa where you will see the former Geisha district, Higashi Chaya, with its beautiful cobbled streets and lovely wooden houses. Do not miss Shima Geisha House, which is perfectly well preserved. This national treasure displays objects that used to belong to Geisha. Then, you can take the train to Tokyo, the exciting capital!
- As night falls over the city, admire the colourful neon lights in the Ginza district, which is renowned for housing all the international fashion brands! In the Sony Building, you will find a showroom where you can test all of the brand’s latest gadgets!
- In the evening, discover Tokyo by night as you explore the Odaiba district, which is on an artificial island. Enjoy dinner in a restaurant overlooking the lights of Tokyo Bay and the Rainbow Bridge.

Jour 12 – Tokyo Discover the largest fish market in the world: Tsukiji Market
- In the early morning, stroll around the largest fish market in the world: Tsukiji Marketwhere thousands of different kinds of fish are sold every day! For breakfast, you can even try the freshest sushi imaginable at the Daiwa sushi restaurant, located inside the market! After enjoying a pleasant stroll in thelandscape garden of Hama Rikyu, where the flower arrangements offer an interesting contrast with the surrounding buildings, you will take a cruise on the Sumida river and enjoy the incredible views of Tokyo as you are taken all the way to Senso-Ji temple in the working-class district of Asakusa.
- Then, discover Ueno Park, a favourite destination of Tokyo’s residents, where you will find beautiful temples and museums. Stop by the Akibahara district, also known as Electric Town, where you will find state-of-the-art electronics as well as manga and merchandise stores. Do not forget to take a stroll in the Imperial Palace Park, a giant green space in the centre of the city.
- Then go to the Harajuku district, where you will find the relaxing Yoyogi Park, a wooded haven of tranquillity within the city that houses Meiji Jingu shrine.
- At nightfall, wander along the colourful streets of Harajuku, the fashion district for young people and the perfect place for a shopping spree! Not far from there, walk down Omotesando Avenue, Tokyo’s Champs-Elysees, where you will find many fashion and luxury boutiques offering you an opportunity for yet more shopping. As the day comes to an end, explore the famous Shibuya district, renowned for having the largest intersection in the world and for its thousands of blinking neon lights and giant TV screens that are never turned off! We recommend you have dinner in one of the many restaurants in this area: there is something for everyone!

Jour 13 – Yokohama Discover the beautiful garden hidden in Yokohama: Sankei-en
- Discover the beautiful garden hidden in the second largest city in Japan: Sankei-en. Built in 1906, this park houses various buildings dating back to the Edo period, including a wonderful gassho-zukuri, a thatched-roof house traditionally found in the Japanese Alps. From the top of a three-storey pagoda dating back to 1457, you may catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji.
- Make the most of this time to stroll around Chinatown, Yokohama’s Chinese district, which was founded in 1863. Walk along the colourful little alleyways and breathe in the smell of the delicious Chinese food that you can enjoy here. Do not miss the Kantei-byotemple, with its Baroque style that offers a sharp contrast to the Japanese architectural style. In the afternoon, return to Tokyo and discover a little-known haven of peace: Happo-en garden, where you can see a wonderful collection ofhundred-year-old bonsai.

Jour 14 – Mito Discover the beautiful garden hidden in Yokohama : Sankei-en
- This morning, discover one of the three most beautiful gardens in Japan, after Kanazawa’s Kenroku-en and Okayama’s Koraku-en : Mito’s Kairaku-en, which is a 1h30 train ride from Tokyo. Created during the Edo period, this garden is renowned for its plum trees. The park offers a series of landscapes: terraced gardens, gardens with marsh plants as well as greenhouses with tropical plants and fruit trees. Enjoy a lovely stroll far from the bustle of Tokyo, which you will return to in the afternoon.

Jour 15 – Kamakura Admire the Daibutsu, a giant bronze statue of Buddha, which was cast and sculpted in 1252
- Take the train to discover Kamakura, a small seaside town, south of Tokyo. The former capital of the Shogun from 1185 to 1333 is far from the bustling capital.
- Walk around this small coastal town, and enjoy beautiful temples and shrines in a hushed atmosphere. Engaku-ji is one of the most famous Zen Buddhist temples in Japan. It was built in 1282, but now only 17 of the 40 original buildings still remain. We will also visit Hachiman-gu shrine. Originally built by the water, this temple, which dates back to 1063, was moved to its current location in 1191. Consecrated to Hachiman, the God of War, this is the most important Shinto shrine in Japan.
- Admire the Daibutsu, a giant bronze statue of Buddha, which was cast and sculpted in 1252. It is 13 metres high, which makes it the second tallest Buddha in Japan after the one in Nara. The Buddha is sitting in the lotus position and has been mediating for over700 years under the stars.

- The visits mentioned in this program are merely suggestions. Of course, you can allocate your free time as you wish and visit other towns near Tokyo and Kyoto apart from those mentioned in the itinerary.
- Most of the lunches and dinners in this tour are at your leisure to allow you can appreciate the diversity of Japanese cuisine according to your tastes and wishes. Please note that it is very easy to find food in Japan as there are many little restaurants offering a wide variety of dishes. Furthermore, simple, filling meals are inexpensive. Bon appetit!
Climate
- Are you coming to Japan in winter?
Bring warm clothes as the winter temperatures in Tokyo are similar to those in Paris.
If you are travelling to the north of Japan in winter, to the west coast or to the Japanese Alps, bring clothes adapted to extreme temperatures since cold winds from Siberia often blow over Japan!
A real Northern experience! - Are you going to Japan in summer?
Please note that the weather will be very hot and humid! Pack your summer clothes but do not forget to bring an umbrella, especially in June and September, as well as warmer clothes for the cool evenings or for the north of Japan. Do not forget your sunglasses, hats and swimming costumes! - Are you going to Japan during the intermediary seasons: spring and autumn?
Do not hesitate to bring summer clothes (shorts, swimming costumes, T-shirts, light shoes) as well as winter clothes (umbrella, jeans, jumpers, jackets and closed shoes) as the temperatures are mild in the south of Japan but cooler in Tokyo and the north. - Are you stopping off in Asia on the way there or on the way back?
In this case, to avoid standing out in Hong Kong in your ski-suit or winter jacket, pack T-shirts, shorts and light shoes.
