  • Night and meal on board.

  • Arrive at Sapporo airport, where you will be greeted by our English-speaking assistant, who will help you to reach the town centre.
  • Once you have settled into your hotel, the rest of the day is free so you can start discovering the city on your own.
  • You can visit the Sapporo Beer Garden, the first Japanese brewery, built in 1876. It turned Sapporo into the Japanese beer capital and one of the most important beer producing areas in the world!
  • Walk around Nijo Market where local delicacies are sold every day! You can sample the local dish — Donburi Uni Ikura — a bowl of sea urchins and salmon roe on a bed of rice.
  • Finally, in the evening, experience the bustle of Susukino district, one of the liveliest districts in Japan, and enjoy its shopping street: Tanuki-dori. The atmosphere of its bars, neon lights and densely packed crowd is electric!
  • Lunch and dinner at your leisure.

  • Leave in a private car with chauffeur to discover the area around Sapporo.
  • You will go to the charming little port of Otaru, which supplies crabs and fish to Sapporo. The best sushi in the whole region can be enjoyed here, especially in Sushiya street, devoted to sushi restaurants.
  • Stroll around the small streets of the town where beautiful 20th century Western-style houses line a small canal.
  • After lunch, you will go to Jôzankei Onsen spa resort where you can relax in natural hot springs.
  • Admire Yu no taki Falls where Japanese people follow a specific ritual to make wishes.
  • Enjoy a pleasant stroll along Futami Jôzan path, which will take you to a suspension bridge. In the evening, your car will take you back to your hotel.
  • Lunch and dinner at your leisure.

  • In the morning, take the train to Noboribetsu, one hour from Sapporo. At the station, you will be greeted by your private car that will take you for a drive around this volcanic region.
  • Start by discovering Jigokudani Valley, where you can admire a lunar-like landscape and fumaroles.
  • You will then continue on to the boiling Tessen Pond where geysers erupt from time to time.
  • You will also have the opportunity to admire amazing lakes: Kuttara-ko, and Tôya-ko, one of the three volcanic lakes in Shikotsu-Toyâ National Park. On its shores, you will be amazed by Usu-zan volcano, which erupted for the last time in the year 2000.
  • In the evening, you will return to your hotel in Noboribetsu where you will have dinner.
  • Lunch and dinner at your leisure at the hotel.

  • Later in the afternoon, take the train to the town of Kushiro where you will arrive for dinner.

  • This morning, discover Kushiro Shitsugen National Park where the largest marshlands in the world, the size of Tokyo, can be found. They house hundreds of different species of plants and birds, including more than 2,000 different kinds of animals and plants, as well as the famous red crest Japanese crane.
  • To enable you to view this extraordinary fauna, your private car will take you to Kushiro Marsh, Kottara Marsh and Hosooka, the most renowned of the observatories. On a clear day, you can see Mount Shari in the northern part of the marshes and the Akan mountain range in the north-west.
  • Lunch and dinner at your leisure.
  • Spend the night in the Akan Yuku No sato Tsuruga Ryokan in the heart of Akan Park (or similar).

  • After a delicious breakfast, you will visit Akan National Park, in your private car. It houses many volcanoes, beautiful lakes nestled in calderas and dense forests.
  • You will stop to wander around Io-zan, a lunar-like landscape with bubbling ponds and sulphuric clouds. Prepare to be stunned by these impressive geothermic phenomena!
  • Walk around the banks of Lake Mashû-ko, considered to be one of the most beautiful panoramic views in Hokkaido! This crater buried at the root of sheer cliffs reveals an almost clear blue lake that holds the record for visibility at a depth of 35 metres because the water is so transparent!
  • You will spend the night in a guesthouse in the heart of Akan National Park, in traditional Japanese-style rooms that provide an amazing view of Lake Akan.
  • In the evening, from June to September, you can take a boat trip by night on Lake Akan.
  • Have lunch and dinner at your leisure in your ryokan.
  • Spend the night in the Akan Yuku No sato Tsuruga Ryokan in the heart of Akan Park (or similar)

  • You will leave, still in a private car, for Kawayu Onsenspa resort, which is also in Akan National Park.
  • You can swim in Ohtô River into which the boiling waters of the volcanoes flow.
  • Then, stroll around Lake Kussharo-ko, which is famous for its beaches of hot volcanic sand. You may even catch a glimpse of the local Loch Ness monster, called Kusshii, who is said to live on a small island in the middle of the lake.
  • Relax in the natural hot baths of Sunayu, that provide an amazing view of the Lake!
  • Have lunch and dinner at your leisure in your ryokan.

  • Shiretoko, “ends of the earth”, is the name the Ainu people gave to this mythical peninsula in the east of Hokkaido thousands of years ago.
  • The wildest, most unspoilt region of Japan, Shiretoko is a natural reserve of rugged terrain, dense forests, sheer cliffs and deep lakes housing a unique ecosystem.
  • On your first day in the Park, discover one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Japan, Oshinkoshin, where fresh water plunges 80 metres into the sea.
  • You will take a small path to Furepe Falls, which is fed by underground water, and gushes from the side of an almost vertical cliff. The water then flows into the sea. The cliffs are the ideal nesting place for sea birds that live here peacefully.
  • Lunch and dinner at your leisure at the hotel.
  • Spend the night in the Kitakobushi Hotel in Utoro (or similar).

  • You will continue exploring the peninsula, which has the largest population of brown bears and cranes in Japan, in a private car.
  • Discover the region of the Five Lakes, in the heart of a dense primeval forest where many wild animals roam freely: foxes, deer and bears.
  • Walk along hiking paths to discover the many details of this natural setting. From the Five Lakes, take a shuttle to Kamuiwakka Falls, a hot waterfall of sulphuric water.
  • In various natural little pools, you can enjoy an exceptional bath. Do not forget to bring your swimming costume!
  • Then get back into your private car to go to the most amazing hot springs in Hokkaido : Iwaobetsu onsen!
  • Various rotenburobaths have been built in the forest and are fed by the neighbouring river. Relax in exceptional landscapes! A real treat!
  • A Rausu, During the afternoon, you will take a closer look at the sea eagles and the whales who have found a refuge in these northern waters,
  • In the evening, you will return to your hotel in Utoro.

  • In a private car, you will go to the town of Abashiri, which, with its great lakes and the shores of the Okhotsk Sea, is a must-see!
  • Visit Ryûhyo-kan Museum. The Okhotsk Sea is the object of studies and fascination, especially concerning the formation of the famous icebergs that float in it in winter. The water at the bottom is salt water but the water is less salty at the surface because of the fresh water from the Russian river Amur, which allows these glaciers to form from mid-January to mid-April. Sadly, global warming threatens to bring an end to the atypical situation that makes this the southernmost sea on the planet where the waters freeze in winter!
  • You can also visit the old penitentiary which was built in 1890 and was renowned as being the harshest one in Japan as it was made of wood and had no heating in winter when temperatures could easily drop to -20C°!
  • But the must-see museum of the town is the Museum of Northern Peoples, the most interesting and complete museum in Hokkaido, which focuses on the cultures and peoples of the Arctic circle: Ainus in Japan but also the Samet in Lapland, Inuits and Indians.
  • In the evening, you will have dinner in your ryokan.
  • Spend the night in the Hokuten no Oka Hotel in Abashiri (or similar).

  • This morning, you will take the train to the town of Sounkyo Onsen, the first stop on the trail through Daizetsuzan National Park, which you will follow in a private car. This Park was created in 1934 and is the largest national park in Japan. Its name means « Snowy Mountains » and refers to the five mountains that are over 2,000 metres high. The park is famous for its wild flora and fauna and houses rare species such as the last brown bears in the archipelago.
  • You will stroll around the amazing scenery of the Sounkyo Canyon, a series of steep gorges, until you reach two incredible waterfalls: Ginga no Taki, then Ryusei no Taki that fall on either side of a cliff and are nicknamed “male waterfall” and “female waterfall”.
  • In the evening, you will return to Sounkyo Onsen, a very famous spa resort in Hokkaido.
  • In the evening, you will have dinner in your ryokan.
  • Spend the night in the Sounkyo Choyo Resort Hotel in Sounkyo Onsen (or similar).

  • Discover the region of Mount Asahi dake, the roof of Hokkaido, at 2,290 metres above sea-level.

  • Next, visit the charming village of Biei. In the surrounding countryside, admire the lush fields of flowers and lavender that give the region a charming air of Provence.

Different hikes are possible on the island, between forests and fields of flowers. You will continue towards Cape Soyâ, the northernmost cape in Japan, which offers the view of a beautiful sea of ice stretching out as far as the eye can see in winter. You may even glimpse the Russian island of Sakhalin in the distance, on a clear day. Take the ferry to Rishiri-tô, famous for its 1,721 metre-high volcanic cone, which has a similar shape to Mount Fuji.

    • Are you coming to Japan in winter?
      Bring warm clothes as the winter temperatures in Tokyo are similar to those in Paris.
      If you are travelling to the north of Japan in winter, to the west coast or to the Japanese Alps, bring clothes adapted to extreme temperatures since cold winds from Siberia often blow over Japan!

    • Are you going to Japan in summer?
      Please note that the weather will be very hot and humid! Pack your summer clothes but do not forget to bring an umbrella, especially in June and September, as well as warmer clothes for the cool evenings or for the north of Japan. Do not forget your sunglasses, hats and swimming costumes!
    • Are you going to Japan during the intermediary seasons: spring and autumn?
      Do not hesitate to bring summer clothes (shorts, swimming costumes, T-shirts, light shoes) as well as winter clothes (umbrella, jeans, jumpers, jackets and closed shoes) as the temperatures are mild in the south of Japan but cooler in Tokyo and the north.
    • Are you stopping off in Asia on the way there or on the way back?
      In this case, to avoid standing out in Hong Kong in your ski-suit or winter jacket, pack T-shirts, shorts and light shoes.
