The spring at Yunomine Onsen was discovered approximately 1,800 years ago and is generally considered the oldest hot spring in Japan. The small community of Yunomine is made up of a picturesque group of traditional inns nestled in a small valley in the heart of the sacred Kumano mountains. It is said that these waters change colour seven times a day. Hot water ablutions still take place during the Kumano Hongu Taisha festival in spring.
