Mount Hiei

Mount Hiei (in Japanese: 比叡山, Hiei-zan) is a mountain located northeast of the city of Kyōto, at the border between Kyōto and Shiga Prefectures, Japan. The mountain is famous for its temples, Enryaku-ji and Mii-dera, the first outposts of the Buddhist Tendai sect. Enryaku-ji was founded on the top of Mount Hiei by Saichō in 788. The temple complex was destroyed by Nobunaga Oda in 1571 to counter the rise in power of the sect’s warrior monks (Sōhei), but was later rebuilt. It is still the main temple of the Tendai sect today. Mii-dera is at the foot of the mountain and was founded by Emperor Temmu in 672.
