According to legend, the Japanese Imperial Family used to live in the Miyazaki region but, following the advice of a wise elder of the tribe, they left to conquer the Kinki region, which was a better location from which to rule Japan. After they left, the town no longer played a significant role in history. In 1883, the town reappeared once more when the government chose it as the capital of the newly created Miyazaki Prefecture.
