Mito

The Japanese city of Mito, literally water gate, is the capital of Ibaraki Prefecture, in the eastern part of Honshū Island, approximately 100 km (about 60 miles) north of Tōkyō. Mito is located in the centre of Ibaraki Prefecture, in the Kantō Plain. It is crossed by the River Naka. It was once used as a waterway and so, when the city’s port was most prosperous, it took the name of water gate.
