Ise

The Japanese town of Ise was formerly called Ujiyamada. It is located in the southeastern part of Mie Prefecture. It is famous in part for Ise Temple, which is consecrated to Amaterasu, the highest Shinto goddess, and other gods. The temple became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004, as part of the sacred sites and pilgrimage trails of the Kii mountains. The town also houses Kogakukan University, which is famous for its Shinto studies. It delivers the title of Shinto priest.
