The 'Bessho Onsen' hot spring resort is the oldest in the Shinshu region. With three Rakuji temples, four residences for bonzes and sixty inns, Bessho was a centre for religion and education nicknamed ‘the Kamakura of Shinshu'. The town attracted many poets and writers. Its outdoor hot baths – Ishi-yu (stone bath), Oh-yu (big bath) and Daishi-yu (bonze bath) – all have a long past and many stories are connected to them. They are renowned for leaving the skin soft and are known for being ‘Beauty Baths’. The water is sulphuric and therefore can help cure stomach problems, rheumatism, gout, skin problems. etc.
